Introduction
The Rwandan genocide, which took place over 100 nightmarish days in 1994, is one of the most horrific events in recent human history. The focus of this website is to present the power of identity labels to create divisions within society and how these divisions can then be exploited with often disastrous results.
Through the different pages on this site, the visitor can experience how the exploitation of identity led to the creation of artificial ethnic groups which were then used against each other for the benefit of colonial governments and a military dictatorship. Tragically, the final result of these differences was the slaughter of an estimated 900,000 innocent lives.
Ultimately, the creators of this site hope that you will take from this site a greater understanding of the power of identity and the inherent dangers of concentrating on human differences. Humanity needs to recognize that we are unique but the human condition binds us all as one.
Rwanda has recently made steps towards eliminating the Hutu/Tutsi labels which allowed for the tragic events of 1994, through this website we hope to inspire you to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of this step for us all.
