Conclusion
Truth and Reconciliation in Africa is plagued by many problems. Issues such as punishment for perpetrators and reparations for victims are often neglected due to political and economic restraints. Despite these problems, these commissions are successful in their ability to create an official account of tragic events but whether or not they will prevent future atrocities is unclear.
This website is focused on the role that ethnic identity played in the Rwandan Genocide. As the process of reconciliation continues in Rwanda through the Gacaca Courts, “…reinforcing (Rwandan) unity”1 has become one of their main goals. By encouraging the eradication of Hutu and Tutsi labels by citizens, the Courts of made a giant step towards achieving this goal. Africa has a tragic history, one necessitating the establishment of truth and reconciliation processes often. As much as we hope that the need for future truth and reconciliation commissions will never come, it is still good to know that the process, as demonstrated in Africa, can develop into making some positive steps towards a brighter future.
